The fishing village of Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village located on the south-eastern coast of Malta. It is Malta's main fishing port. The village's name comes from "marsa" which means "port" and "xlokk", which is the local name for south east. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the luzzu, with the mythical eyes painted on their prows. The painted eyes on these luzzus are believed to protect the boats from evil. These boats are thought to have been used by Maltese sailors since Phoenician times 800 BC. The water in the harbor is a truly amazing pristine turquoise blue - simply surreal!
