Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Akron, OH
Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is a notable country
estate, with gardens, located in Akron, Ohio. Tim and I visited it last week. It reminded us of Downtown Abbey!
The estate was built between 1912 and 1915 for F. A.
Seiberling, founder of The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and his wife
Gertrude. They gave it the name, Stan Hywet, Old Enlgish for “stone quarry” or
“stone Hewn” to reflect the site’s earlier use and the most prominent feature
of the estate. In 1957, the Sieberling family donated the Stan Hywet estate to
a non-profit organization for its preservation. It is now an historic house
museum and country estate, open seasonally to the public, in keeping with the
stone inscription above the manor house front door – “Non Noblis Solum” –
meaning “Not for Us Alone”.
Tim's Grandma (Marie Cross) was a ladies maid at Stan Hywet Hall. While working there, she met her husband, Tim's Grandpa, who was a chauffeur for the Seiberlings.
Grandma Cross is the lady on the left.
